2008 Balboa Reserve

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

This is a limited production and great blend from two varietals, Tempranillo and Grenache. Made in winemaking styles indicative to the Rioja Region of Spain then aged and blended with a Paso Robles flare. Deep garnet and crimson in color, lush layers of dark raspberry aromas greet the senses with overlapping hints of fresh strawberries and kiwi. An opulent mid-palate mouth feel is balanced with elegant smooth tannins. The 2008 Balboa Reserve is Sold out! Please consider the 2009 Balboa Reserve.

The Vineyard

The 2008 Balboa Reserve is composed of Estate Grown varietals hand selected from the rows in the vineyard and the best barrels in the cellar. Located in the proposed sub-appellation of the Estrella District in Paso Robles, the vineyard is planted across rolling hills that are met at its bottom by the Huero Huero River. Starting from the top of rolling hills the vineyards row orientation is positioned in the Southwest position utilizing a vertical shoot position trellising system. The combination of the growing techniques, vineyard positioning and alluvial soil capture the vineyards site specific terroir.

Fermentation / Maturation Notes

From the point of veraison to the time of harvesting, our winemaker frequently walks the vineyard hand inspecting clusters to ensure even ripening throughout each block. Following harvest the Tempranillo and Grenache were crushed and fermented separately. The Grenache fermentation lasted 8 days on its skins, its juice was then transferred to barrel to complete malolactic fermentation. The Tempranillo was fermented at low temperatures for 21 days and extended its maceration for another 7 days before it was drawn off its skins and transferred to barrel. Both fermentation styles bring out unique flavors and aromas in each varietal.
