SEA SHELL CELLARS
2013 BALBOA RESERVE
Winemakers Tasting Notes
Our 2013 Balboa Reserve is a red blend that is composed of Tempranillo, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. During the first year of maturation we selected the very best French Oak barrels from each varietal, from these barrels a limited amount of this Reserve wine is blended just prior to bottling.
Dark Garnet to the eye, this vintage has warm aromas of Toasted Maple and Caramel followed by Red Fruit and spring flowers.
The palate is round with a tight middle that opens up into a dry medium body. Muddled Cherries and ripe Strawberry flavors fill the mouth with lean tannins that extend into a soft and salivating finish.
FERMENTATION / MATURATION NOTES
Rioja inspired winemaking techniques are deployed in crafting this wine. It begins by gently fermenting the Syrah and Grenache on their whole uncrushed berries; the Tempranillo is crushed slightly with stem inclusion and cold soaked. The cellar temperature warms the Tempranillo slowly until native fermentation begins. Lastly picked is the Mourvèdre, it is fermented very simple to show its tannic nature. Each varietal experiences a low temperature fermentation, extended maceration and maximum skin extraction.
